Dear Better Wetherby Supporter
Better Wetherby (BW) recently circulated details of a public consultation exercise on the draft Transport Strategy for Leeds that concludes on 26th March 2021. In responding to the consultation, BW highlighted various concerns, pointing out that the draft strategy ignored the needs of the outer suburbs and major settlements such as Wetherby. This issue has been highlighted recently in the Wetherby News and other local papers.
A wider consultation on the future of transport in our region is currently being carried out by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) in respect of strategy and policy across the 5 local authority areas in West Yorkshire (Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield).
WYCA declare that their planning for the county-wide transport network will enable a net zero carbon authority by 2038; clean air; a green revolution and reduced congestion. Their stated ambition is a ‘doorstep to destination’ alternative to the private car for everyone.
BW would encourage everyone to respond to this consultation to ensure that the views of residents are heard by WYCA. For more details of BW concerns, and links to the consultation exercise, please visit www.betterwetherby.com/transport
Roger Owen, Chair of Better Wetherby, commented ‘As with the Leeds transport strategy, Wetherby is in danger of being overlooked by WYCA. Better Wetherby has real concerns that there has been no discussion about the needs of Wetherby and the outer North East of Leeds area.Where are the regular bus links in this area to discourage car use?Where are the plans for regular public transport links from Wetherby to and from Leeds, York, Harrogate, Wharfedale and Airedale? When will parking be made available adjacent to public transport links to help discourage car use?’
Mr. Owen added, ‘The A58 corridor is not recognised in the plans as a major route. Wetherby is not even marked on various maps and diagrams in the strategy documents regarding Mass Transit, Integrated Transport System and Pan North Rail Connectivity Plan. Wetherby needs to find its voice in influencing future transport strategy, so I encourage local people to complete the survey and make their views known’.

The deadline for completion of the WYCA survey is 11th April 2021.
