Transport in and Around Wetherby
Wetherby is a growing town with limited public transport. Bus services have reduced in frequency and reach, regional connections are weak, and strategic transport plans repeatedly overlook the town altogether.
Better Wetherby works to ensure that transport planning recognises Wetherby as a major settlement, supports sustainable growth, and gives residents realistic alternatives to car dependency.

Transport issues.
-
Major settlement, yet missing from plans
Wetherby is described by Leeds City Council as a major settlement, yet does not appear meaningfully in regional transport plans.
-
Bus frequency below Planning standards
Bus frequencies to Leeds have never met the standard used by planners to define a major settlement.
-
Poor cross‑boundary travel
Cross‑boundary travel, particularly to York and Harrogate, is poorly addressed.
-
Services reduced without notice
Services serving Wetherby have been reduced, re‑routed or withdrawn with little notice to users.
-
Omitted from maps and strategies
Strategic documents often omit Wetherby entirely from maps and connectivity plans.
-
Housing without transport investment
Large housing developments continue to be approved without corresponding improvements to public transport.

What Better Wetherby Is Calling For
We are not opposed to change, but we believe it must be planned properly.
Our priorities include:
regular, reliable bus services linking Wetherby with Leeds, York and Harrogate
proper recognition of Wetherby and Leeds Outer North East in regional transport strategies
consideration of Park and Ride facilities to reduce commuter traffic
better coordination across authority boundaries
transport planning that genuinely supports climate and air quality commitments
These are not exceptional demands. They are the basic requirements of a functioning town.
What We Have Done
Better Wetherby has:
responded formally to consultations by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds City Council
challenged the omission of Wetherby from mass transit and connectivity plans
raised concerns about service reductions to York, Harrogate and Leeds
worked alongside councillors, the Civic Society and neighbouring communities
pressed for mitigation and improvements where developments have gone ahead
In some cases we have not been able to stop outcomes, but we have helped secure improvements and keep pressure on decision‑makers.
