Better Wetherby Newsletter – September 2025
Here’s a concise summary of the September 2025 Better Wetherby newsletter.
PLANNING LATEST:
Leeds Local Plan Consultation (2022–42):
Public consultation runs until 15 September 2025. BW urges residents to give feedback, as developers continue to push for hundreds more homes in Wetherby. Wetherby already faces major growth pressures, including 800+ homes underway at Racecourse Approach, 130 more proposed, and links to Maltkiln and the 210‑home Harrogate Road scheme.Maltkiln: Government Inspector’s report has ruled the proposed 3,000–4,000‑home new settlement near Cattal “legally sound,” with modifications required. BW acknowledges benefits for housing supply and local economy, but remains concerned about pressure on doctors, schools, roads, parking and air quality, especially alongside other local developments.
Stockeld Park / Spofforth Hill (Hallam Land) – 210 Homes: The latest application has received 360 objections (99%), even more than the previous rejected scheme. North Yorkshire Council’s internal determination date is 11 September 2025. BW continues to monitor closely.
WHY IT MATTERS:
Wetherby is facing simultaneous large-scale development pressures, both within Leeds and just across the boundary in North Yorkshire. BW emphasises that resident input is critical to shaping a balanced future for the town.
COMMUNITY EVENTS:
Wetherby Festival – 3 to 11 October 2025: A packed programme including comedy, theatre, music, art, poetry and film screenings at the local cinema. Full details available via Excelle magazine, the Festival website and social media.
Dickensian Christmas Market – Sunday 14 December: Organised by the Lions Club, featuring stalls, music and festive attractions. BW will have a stand again this year—residents are encouraged to pop by.
