Better Wetherby Newsletter – July 2025

Here’s a concise summary of the July 2025 Better Wetherby newsletter.

PLANNING LATEST:

  • Stockeld Park / Hallam Land – New Application for 210 Homes:
Hallam Land has submitted a fresh application (25/02006/OUTMAJ) to build 210 homes on the North Yorkshire side of the Wetherby boundary. It is almost identical to the application refused after a Public Inquiry in February 2020. BW states the development would damage the landscape, increase congestion and pollution, and put further pressure on GPs, dentists, schools and other public services. BW strongly opposes the plan and urges individual objections by 27 July 2025.

  • Context of Growth Pressures: Wetherby has already experienced significant expansion: 1,000+ homes built in the last decade, 780 now under construction at Racecourse Approach, another 130 proposed, and the major Maltkiln development (≈3,000 homes) a short drive away. Additional applications are expected following government commitments to build 1.5 million new homes this parliamentary term.

WHY IT MATTERS:
BW emphasises that this development would effectively extend Wetherby into North Yorkshire, while the burden on infrastructure falls largely on the town. Residents’ objections are vital in influencing the planning decision.

COMMUNITY EVENTS:

  • Himalayan Balsam Bashing – 17 July: Wetherby Civic Society is organising a community effort to remove invasive Himalayan Balsam from the Ings. Volunteers meet at 7pm, Archway at Scaur Bank steps. Gloves, long sleeves and sturdy shoes recommended. Event cancelled if wet.

ALSO WORTH KNOWING:

  • Message from the Acting Chair: Following the passing of long-serving Chair Roger Owen, Peter Swales is acting as Chair. BW continues its transition from a company to a charity, though delays from the Charity Commission mean timelines have shifted. The group remains committed to completing the process.

  • Leeds Local Plan Consultation (2022–42): The consultation opened on 7 July 2025 and runs until 15 September 2025. BW highlights a public drop‑in event on 24 July, 3–7pm, Wetherby Town Hall and will share further information in upcoming newsletters.

  • Parking Charges – No Final Decision: LCC’s proposed charges for Wilderness and Old Station car parks remain undecided. Public consultation closed on 14 March and the town is awaiting the final outcome.
