Better Wetherby Newsletter – January 2025
Here’s a concise summary of the January 2025 Better Wetherby newsletter.
PLANNING LATEST:
Lidl Development: Lidl’s appeal was upheld, allowing demolition of the Mercure Hotel and construction of a new Lidl store with retirement accommodation. No new updates have been released by Lidl or Leeds City Council. BW remains convinced it is the wrong site and expects any forthcoming application to be heavily conditioned.
Maltkiln Development: BW notes the absence of the Inspector’s report from last September’s Inquiry, which temporarily stalls progress on the 3,000+ home new settlement near Cattal. BW remains opposed, watches closely, and highlights concerns about affordability obligations and infrastructure strain.
Racecourse Approach: Taylor Wimpey has begun onsite works, with a 7‑year build programme for nearly 800 homes. Persimmon is preparing for around 128 dwellings, reduced from 300. Access roads will be constructed by LCC once tenders are approved. BW expects to issue more detailed updates soon.
WHY IT MATTERS:
With multiple large-scale developments proposed for Wetherby and the surrounding boundary—Racecourse, Maltkiln, and prospective NYC sites—BW warns that the town’s roads, services and environment are already under significant pressure. Active resident engagement remains essential.
COMMUNITY EVENTS:
Biodiversity Talk – 27 March: Professor Alastair Fitter (Yorkshire Wildlife Trust) will speak to Wetherby U3A on biodiversity at St James’ Church Hall, 2pm. Entry £3 including a donation to YWT.
ALSO WORTH KNOWING:
Parking Charges – Ongoing Issue: Leeds City Council still plans to introduce parking charges at Wilderness and Old Station car parks. Despite a 9–1 Executive Board vote in favour, a statutory consultation must now take place, lasting 6–12 months. Residents will be informed when they can contribute.
New 20mph Speed Limits: Linton Road now joins the town centre area in adopting a 20mph limit. Enforcement is underway. Wider highway issues are reviewed monthly in public meetings at Wetherby Methodist Church.
